1.  Is alcoholism a disease?

It depends upon how you want to define "disease."  Certainly, alcoholism is not something you can "catch," like most diseases.  Also, it is not something you can transmit to someone else.  However, there is evidence that people are born with a genetic tendency to become alcoholics or not.  That is, the tendency to become an alchoholic can be inherited to some extent.  However, it is a trusim that if you never drink alcohol, you will never become an alcoholic.  That's why it is important that if you have alcoholism in your family, you avoid alcohol altogether.  You will never become an alcoholic if you don't drink in the first place.  By the way, you should also know that once you start drinking in excess, there are changes in your brain that make it very difficult to stop drinking.  Once again, the best way to avoid alcoholism is to never start drinking in the first place.
