Scriptures In Counseling

Integrated Christian Counseling

The Central Role of Scriptures in Counseling

by Dr. Brian Campbell

The Bible is best mental health text book ever written!  And God's Word of God is the best counselor.  Whatever your clients’ problems or concerns may be, there is no greater authority for living than God's Holy Word.  I could not imagine calling myself a Christian counselor if I did not use scriptures with my Christian clients.

During the course of my career, I have produced three books for Christian counseling that consist almost entirely of scriptures.  I keep these books next to my counseling chair and refer to them periodically when counseling.

Pearls:  Scriptures to live by

Godly Counsel:  Scriptures for today’s world

Christlike:  Walking the Walk

"Pearls" consists entirely of scriptures (over 2,500) arranged under different counseling topics, covering over 170 topics.  A complete list of topics covered in Pearls can be found on my internet site:  Counseling4Christians.com   Godly Counsel is a condensed version of Pearls that contains my summary of important counseling topics.  Finally, Christlike: Walking the Walk, focus on the scriptural bais of what it means to be a mentally healthy Christian.

All of the scriptures in Pearls are can be found on my internet site.  In addition, all of the chapters from Godly Counsel are also freely available on my website.  At the moment, I am in the process of developing a special version of my website for use with smartphones.  I believe that if you have an iphone, if you go to Counseling4Christians.com, you and your clients would be able to download an APP that would allow you (and them) to quickly access the scriptures and other counseling resources.

In addition to the "printed word," I have also developed audio productions that are designed to bring the Truth of scriptures to my clients.  So far, I have developed two tools:  "Overcoming Anxiety (Audio)," and "Overcoming Depression (Audio)."  These audios consist entirely of scriptures read by me with background music.  They are available on my internet site.  Clients can download these audios as MP3 files and play them from their computers or MP3 players.  Many of my clients go to bed at night listening to God's Truths that argue against the irrational beliefs underlying their anxiety or depression.

Please remember that scriptures are an integral part of Christian Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CCBT).  The Truths contained in the scriptures are the basis for defeating the irrational beliefs taught to us by the world and the evil one.

The Truth Sets us Free!

“Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free!”
(John 8: 32)

Truths come from the Bible and from the in-dwelling of the Holy Spirit.  If you are weak in your knowledge of the Bible, then start today to learn more about God’s Holy Word.  In addition, pray to the Holy Spirit (the “Counselor”) to supernaturally bring you (and your clients) to a knowledge of the Truth.

“But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name,
will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.”
(John 14:26)

As you utilize the scriptures in counseling, and as you bring clients to a knowledge of the Truth, remember to be humble and readily acknowledge that you also need to be reminded of the truths of the Bible.  As I counsel others, I very often hear myself say, “Let’s stop for a moment and look together to see what God has to say about that…”

I not only regularly use scriptures in counseling, I often encourage clients to memorize scriptures and “hide them in their hearts.”  I recommend this practice because God has recommended this practice to me.  In addition, many of my clients are given "homework" at the end of their sessions.  I may give them a chapter from Godly Counsel, or a few pages from Pearls.  If nothing else, I give them my business card where the website address of Counseling4Christians.com is located.  I encourage them to explore the scriptures and turn to them as a source of Truth, and as a means by which they can start to defeat the irrational beliefs that may be underlying their mental health problems.

“When your words came, I ate them; they were my joy and my heart’s delight,
for I bear your name, O Lord God Almighty.”
(Jeremiah 15:16)

“I have hidden your word in my heart
that I might not sin against you.”
(Psalm 119:11)

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching,
rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness."

(2 Timothy 3:16)

Finally, as you learn to counsel others, I recommend that you read your Bible on a regular basis, study the scriptures, meditate on them, and, to the best of your ability, teach them to others.  Remember, one of the best ways to help others “come to a knowledge of the truth,” is for you to study God’s Word and keep learning and growing in wisdom.

“Send forth your light and your truth, let them guide me;
let them bring me to your holy mountain, to the place where you dwell.”
(Psalm 43:3)

“Teach me your way, O LORD,
and I will walk in your truth.”

(Psalm 86:11)

Keep seeking the Truth and bring God’s Truth to your clients.  And pray for integrity, that God will keep you from straying, as you bring His Truth to others.

“I seek you with all my heart;
do not let me stray from your commands.”
(Psalm 119:10)
